Liz O. Baylen (born March 25, 1979) is one of
America's most notable young photojournalists. A
native of Ohio, she graduated with honors from Ohio
University's School of Visual Communications in 2001,
and immediately after began a five-year stint at The
Washington Times newspaper. During her time there
she concentrated on long form photo essays,
specializing in covering psychological trauma and in
the process became one of America's leading
chroniclers of mental health issues. She also covered
assignments around the world, including in Lebanon, Korea, the
Caucauses, and the prison camp in Guantanamo Bay,
Cuba. While with the Washington Times Baylen was a
finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for her contribution
to the staff's coverage of the DC sniper in 2002.
Baylen has won numerous awards for her work, including
multiple honors in the Best of Photojournalism and
Pictures of the Year International competitions. In
2005, she won Political Photo of the Year from the
prestigious White House News Photographers
association.
